Nestled in the swinging landscape of the Hochsauerland, the half-timbered village of Oberkirchen lies at the foot of the Rothaar ridge at an altitude of 450 - 700 meters. Lovingly restored houses, small stores with tradition, cozy inns and cafes and the baroque church of St. Gertrudis, which is worth seeing, give the village, which has a good 800 inhabitants, its endearing charm. Since the municipal reorganization in 1975, Oberkirchen has belonged to Schmallenberg, 8 km away, the largest municipality in NRW and the "goldiest" town in Germany. Nine of its 83 villages are among the most beautiful spots in Germany, awarded a gold medal in the national competition "Our village shall become more beautiful". Many others won silver and bronze titles - including in the current "Our Village Has a Future" competition.
